Under the supervision of the Aquatics Director or Aquatics Coordinator, the Swim Instructor provides excellent customer
service while giving direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. The Swim Instructor creates
a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with the YMCA of Central Florida
policies and procedures.

Instruct swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with the YMCA of Central Florida guidelines, having prepared lesson
Ensure all aquatic standards required by the YMCA of the USA for each skill are utilized.
Maintain accurate records for swimming participants as required, including progress reports and attendance.
Greet and develop effective relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
Assist in the retention of existing members and engagement of new members by informing them of the Family Center aquatic
programs, including Safe Start survival lessons, swim lessons, swim team, lap swimming, and group exercise classes.
Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed.
Know, understand and consistently apply safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
Know and review all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with the YMCA
of Central Florida policies and procedures.
Attend all staff meetings, monthly in-services and trainings as required.
Assist in the identification of active volunteers for the Family Center Annual Scholarship Campaign.
Promote and represent the mission and core values of the YMCA of Central Florida in the Family Center and its programs.
All other duties assigned by Management.
To be successful, you must meet education, training and experience requirements, and you must be able to demonstrate some
critical knowledge, skills, and abilities.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
Previous swim instructor experience preferred.
Previous customer service experience preferred.
Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications required.
Current Oxygen Administration certification required.
Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor certification required.

Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Excellent follow through actions regarding communication.
Desire and ability to work with people of all ages.
Demonstrated responsibility and dependability.
Must exhibit patience, sensitivity and understanding.
Must be willing to regularly work flexible hours, weekends and holidays.
Must have the ability to pass a swimming skills test.
May be required to sit, stand or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time including continuous physical
endurance for thirty to sixty minutes of aerobic activity.
May be required to work outdoors for extended periods of time. May be exposed to extreme outdoor weather conditions and
temperatures and to wet and/or humid conditions in swimming pool areas.
Must be alert at all times, keeping safety in mind. Must possess acceptable hearing and visual capabilities in order to
monitor environment and members well-being.
Must possess auditory, verbal and visual capabilities in order to adequately communicate via phone and in person.
Must complete successful background screening, which includes criminal and drug screening.
